The THREE Doshas | Elements and Attributes
The Ayurvedic Institute explains this way: “We know that fire is hot and that water and earth are cold.” As these EARTH ELEMENTS act upon us, the way we each experience these elements is unique.
These earth elements are labeled “attributes” you might recognize as air, water, fire, earth, and ether, ultimately described as “states of matter.”
Above all, it is the quality of our experience to these states of matter which identify our dosha type.
The THREE Dosha Types

There are THREE main dosha types called Kapha, Pitta, and Vata. These mind-body types or doshas possess unique emotional as well as physical characteristics.

Breaking Down the Doshas
The Vata Dosha
The Vata dosha your heartbeat, breathing, and all movement, which would include bodily functions. The elements represented are air and ether.
In Hindu philosophy, Prana or life force comes into the body with each breath, the food we eat, and from the earth and ethers. Therefore, deep breathing is vital for everyone but especially important for the Vata type. Air and ether are related to as “wind.”
The VATA in balance
When in balance, these types are creative, adaptive, and full of vitality. Energy bursts are not uncommon. Movement helps them to stay in balance and tend to be slim and slender.
Not being fond of cold weather, the Vata shows appreciation and affinity for warmer climates. Consequently, a Vata may exhibit cold extremities, brittle hair, and dry skin. However, this is a very creative type with much tolerance for others and is full of imagination and ideas.
The VATA out of balance
Imbalance in the Vata type can easily show up as anxiety and fearfulness. In other words, the Vata type must breathe, minimize stress, and find something that fuels their creativity because movement and change are essential for the Vata type.
Additionally, when out of balance, Vata dosha types may find themselves with digestive challenges or weight loss. However, when agitated, the Vata type is much like a hurricane. In other words, a ripe example of the air/wind this type represents.
The Kapha Dosha
KAPHA in Balance
The elements of earth and water describe the Kapha dosha. In other words, this type is a representation of everything that is dense in the body, such as bones, teeth, and muscles. Kapha means “that which sticks” and makes sense, considering that our bones and other connective tissue are what hold us together.
It’s no wonder that this type is quite a grounded and nurturing soul if you find them in balance. Love and compassion are the strong suits of Kapha. They like the lighter side of life and enjoy frequent relaxation breaks. Notably, you will find this much more opposite than the other two doshas, which want to go, go, go.
This type tends to have a stocky body and oily skin.
KAPHA out of balance
Kapha is the dosha most affected by digestion issues if they are not careful with what they eat. Mostly too much salt. They don’t DO stress. Ultimately, when not balanced, digestion stagnates, and the bowel becomes lazy. When this happens, it is similar to a swollen, boggy swamp. Sluggishness and depression occur.
Out of balance Kapha’s might experience respiratory diseases, sinus problems, lifestyle diseases like obesity, diabetes, depression, binge eating disorder, etc.
Additionally, keeping a routine is a must to follow, and that routine does not need to include excitement. The mundane is quite acceptable for them.
The PITTA Dosha
Don’t try to pull one over on the Pitta type. They possess strong intellect, are ambitious, determined, and often thought of as TYPE A personalities.
It’s a fundamental principle of Ayurveda that like increases like. If their fiery side takes prominence you will see more of the symptoms that Pitta is famous for.
Irritability, anger, impatience, judgment, criticism, and jealousy surface when there is imbalance and increase in Pitta. Don’t ever fight with them if they are hungry. You are sure to regret it. Telling them to relax might send them off in a fit of rage. Pitta’s don’t know how to relax.
Excessive hot flashes, burning or itching sensations, and similar flare-ups occur, and even the tongue may appear red or inflamed.
